Gobelin’s Danish Oil Questions and Answers with Expert Advice

Gobelins Danish Oil – Product FAQ

What kinds of wood is Gobelins Danish Oil good for?
Gobelins Danish Oil is suitable for virtually all interior timbers, including Balau, Teak, Imbuia, Okume, Mahogany, Meranti, SA Pine, Oregon Pine, Cypress, Yellowwood, Oak, Ebony, Wild Olive, Beech, Maple, and Bamboo.
In short — if it’s wood, Gobelins Danish Oil loves it.

Is Gobelins Danish Oil suitable for exterior wood?
Yes. For exterior applications, we recommend Gobelins Deck Oils, which are based on Danish Oil technology but specially formulated for outdoor exposure.
Ideal for patio furniture, sundecks, doors, and window frames.

Will surfaces become slippery when wet?
Gobelins Danish Oil produces a finish that is far less slippery than conventional exterior varnishes. As with any surface, footwear with worn smooth soles can increase slip risk.

Can Gobelins Danish Oil be applied over varnish?
No. Danish Oil must penetrate directly into bare wood.
Existing varnish must be fully removed and the surface sanded back to raw timber before application.
Remember: Danish Oil works inside the wood — not on top.

Can Gobelins Danish Oil be diluted?
Yes. It can be diluted up to 50% with Mineral Turpentine (White Spirits).
Dilution can improve penetration, especially on dense hardwoods such as Teak, Okume, and Balau.

How many coats are required?
Typically two to three coats.
Additional coats may be required if the product is diluted.

How do I know when enough oil has been applied?
Apply until the wood no longer absorbs oil.
If the surface becomes sticky, too much has been applied.

Why is my Danish Oil sticky or slow to dry?
This usually means excess product has been applied or the surface was not bare wood.
With Gobelins Danish Oil, less is more.

I applied too much. What should I do?
Saturate the surface with Mineral Turpentine.
Scrub gently with a scouring pad.
Wipe away residue with cotton rags or paper towels.
Allow to dry thoroughly before reapplying thin coats.
